What is an ACEO?

An ACEO (an acronym for Art, Cards, Editions and Originals) is a little piece of original art very collectible. An ACEO can be made with different materials and techniques, but to be considered as an ACEO must have a specific size: 6,4 x 8,9 cm (2,3” x 3,5”). You may keep it in an album or box, frame it alone or with other ACEOS, display it on a little easel, stick it to the fridge inside of a magnetic frame, use it for scrapbooking decoration or for card making, or simply send it as a gift to someone special.

We are at the moment preparing the translation of our site to French. So, I hope to have soon Bia Sorao's site available also in French, for all the people who rather prefer that language instead of the English or the Portuguese. It is probable, however, that the blog will remain written only in English and Portuguese as I am perfecting my French but I still do not feel very comfortable with it.

Christmas Shop Windows / Montras de Natal

This weekend I was in Aachen, Germany, and in a nice square next to this spectacular cathedral, I saw this doubly delicious shop, not only for selling sweets but also for its lovely appearance. I couldn’t resist taking a picture of the shop windows. They really smell like Christmas.

Neste fim de semana passei por Aachen, na Alemanha, e numa pracinha simpática ao pé desta catedral espectacular, vi esta lojinha duplamente deliciosa, não só por vender coisas doces, mas também por ter um aspecto verdadeiramente amoroso. Não resisti a fotografar as montras. Têm mesmo um cheirinho a Natal.

The right color for children’s room (part 2)

Continuing with our article, to choose the right color for children’s room have the following in consideration:

a) The size and the layout of the room – color can help modify both significantly. (see part 1 of the article) .

b) The solar exposure: very sunny and warm rooms vs. cold and dark. The right use of colors can make the room feel more comfortable.

- Warm colors (red, orange, yellow, rose) both pale and dark, will make a dark and cold room seem brighter and warmer
- Cold colors (blue, green, violet) both pale and dark, will cool down a bright and warm room.

c) The personality of the child. There’s a wide consensus that colors have influence on mood and behavior.

- Soft colors help to relax
- Strong colors make the children more active

d) The choice of a theme

If you decide to decorate the room along a theme, you’ll have to see which colors are more suitable for that theme and better contribute to create the intended atmosphere.

For example if you have chosen a nautical theme, blue and white will be probably used, perhaps mixed with a bit of red (for example in boats or pirates themes), or you can add some yellow (to make you think of sun and sand), or aqua and turquoise (for an underwater theme). By now I am sure you got the idea.

Obviously, these colors can appear just in accessories (wall art, rugs, pillows and other decoration) without actually you having to paint the walls.

e) The harmonization and distribution of the colors

Considering that nowadays it is easy to get almost any color you want to paint the walls, it could be easier to match colors by choosing first the fabric that you’re going to use for the decoration or starting with an article you like or already own, as for example a rug, a painting, etc. Thus, choose one or more colors from that article to use as reference for the walls, furniture and accessories.

- To get a balanced color scheme in your room do not concentrate the same color in the same place. Rather, distribute the colors across the room through the use of several accessories. For instance, in a room with walls in two different colors, complement one wall with an accessory in the color of the other wall.

I hope that these advices can be useful. And now, I let you start with the decoration!

A cor certa para um quarto infantil (parte 2)

Continuando com nosso artigo, para escolher a cor certa para um quarto infantil, tenha em consideração o seginte:

a) O tamanho e a forma de um quarto A cor pode ajudar a alterá-los de forma significativa. (sobre esta alínea veja a parte 1 deste artigo).

b) A exposição solar: um quarto muito soalheiro e quente ou pelo contrário frio e escuro. As cores podem ajudar a torná-lo mais confortável.

- Cores quentes (vermelhos, laranjas, amarelos, rosas) quer sejam claras ou escuras, tornam mais luminoso e quente um quarto escuro e frio

- Cores frias (azuis, verdes, violetas) quer sejam claras ou escuras, tornam mais fresco um quarto muito luminoso e quente.

c) A personalidade da criança. É consenso geral que a cor tem influência sobre o humor e o comportamento.

- Cores suaves ajudam a relaxar

- Cores vivas tornam as crianças mais activas

d) A escolha de um tema

Se decidiu decorar o quarto de acordo com um determinado tema, deverá ver quais as cores que se identificam mais com esse tema e podem contribuir para melhor criar o ambiente que pretende.

Por exemplo se escolheu um tema marinho, será muito natural que o azul e o branco se imponham misturados ou não com um pouco de vermelho (por exemplo num tema de barcos ou de piratas), ou pode juntar o amarelo (se no tema quiser lembrar o sol e a areia da praia), ou os tons água e turquesa (se o tema tiver a ver com o fundo do mar). Enfim, decerto deu para perceber a ideia.

Obviamente que essas cores podem ser incluidas apenas nos acessórios (quadros, tapetes, almofadas e outros objectos de decoração), não necessitando necessáriamente de pintar as paredes com elas.

e) A harmonização e distribuição da cor

Atendendo a que actualmente é possível obter praticamente qualquer cor que se queira para pintar a parede, poderá ser mais fácil conjugar as cores se começar pelo tecido que vai usar para a decoração ou partir de qualquer outra peça que goste ou que já tenha, como por exemplo um tapete, um quadro, etc. Escolha uma ou mais cores dessa peça que poderá usar então usar nas paredes, móveis e acessórios.

- Para o quarto ficar mais equilibrado não concentre a mesma cor toda no mesmo ponto. Distribua as cores pelo quarto através do uso de variados acessórios. Por exemplo, num quarto pintado em duas cores diferentes, complemente uma parede com acessórios na cor de outra parede.

Com a enorme variedade que existe hoje em dia em termos de cores disponíveis no mercado e tendo em conta que (sem invalidar algumas tendências mais modernas) num quarto infantil tudo está na moda, a escolha de uma cor para o quarto dos mais pequenos é sobretudo uma questão de gosto e a verificação do que mais se adapta ao espaço, para obter um conjunto final harmonioso.

Se em questões de preferência de cor é melhor deixarmos cada um com a sua opinião, existem algumas pequenas dicas que podem ajudar a tomar a melhor decisão de acordo com o espaço a decorar ou mesmo dar um pequeno empurrão quando a criatividade demora um pouco mais a arrancar.

Assim antes de escolher as cores de um quarto infantil, tenha em consideração o seguinte:

a) O tamanho e a forma de um quarto. A cor pode ajudar a alterá-los de forma significativa.

- As cores escuras e fortes (azul, vermelho, verde, etc.) tornam um quarto mais pequeno e acolhedor. As cores claras e suaves (branco, beje e os tons claros de verde, azul, rosa, violeta ou amarelo, por exemplo) fazem um quarto pequeno parecer maior. As cores podem parecer mais escuras ou mais claras dependendo das cores com as quais se misturem e da luz do quarto.

- Os tectos pintados de branco por contraste com a cor da parede tornam o quarto mais espaçoso. Se o tecto for muito alto e se pretender tornar o quarto mais acolhedor, o tecto poderá ser pintado em cores escuras ou vivas. Estas fazem o tecto parecer mais baixo.

- Paredes pintadas com cores escuras e vivas parecem mais próximas. Se pintar as paredes de cores diferentes poderá equilibrar a forma de um quarto. Ex: um quarto rectangular muito comprido e estreito pode parecer mais quadrado se pintar as paredes mais estreitas com cores escuras ou vivas e as compridas em branco ou com cores claras.

- Se gostar de cores vivas mas o quarto não for muito grande, uma forma de lhe dar um toque de cor mas evitar que fique muito carregado é pintar apenas uma parede com uma cor viva deixando o resto branco ou num tom claro da mesma cor. Ex: rosa forte e rosa claro.

- Se colocar uma barra decorativa na parede, pode manter o quarto espaçoso, se usar as cores escuras abaixo da barra (desde que esta não seja colocada muito alta) e as cores claras acima da barra.

- A mobilia branca ou de tons claros, ou a mobilia pintada no mesmo tom da parede (por exemplo as estantes) chamam menos a atenção, fazendo com que o quarto se mantenha mais espaçoso. Pelo contrário móveis de cores escuras ou vivas e contrastantes com a parede impõem-se mais, parecendo ocupar mais espaço e logo tornar o quarto mais pequeno. O ideal num quarto pequeno, especialmente se as paredes já tiverem um pouco de cor, poderá ser manter os móveis claros, optando por dar os toques de cor adiconal através dos acessórios: tecidos, quadros, almofadas, etc.

With the enormous variety of available colors that exists nowadays in the market and having into account that (without putting aside some more modern trends) in a child’s room everything is in fashion, the choice of a color for the room is overall a matter of taste and of what’s more suitable for the space, to get a harmonious result.

If in matters of color preference it is better to leave each one to his or her opinion, there exist a few tips that can help making the best decision in accordance with the space to decorate or even to give a small push when the creativity takes more time to show up.

Thus, before choosing the colors for the child’s room, have the following in mind:

a) The size and the layout of the room. The color can help to modify them significantly.

- Dark and strong colors (blue, red, green, etc.) make the room smaller and cozier. Pale and soft colors (white, beige, light tones of green, blue, pink, violet or yellow for e.g.) make a small room seem bigger. The colors can look darker or lighter depending on the colors with which they are mixed and on the light of the room.

- White ceilings contrast with the color of the wall and turn the room more spacious. If the ceiling is very high and if you prefer to make it cozier, the ceiling could be painted with dark or bright colors. These make the ceiling look lower.

- Walls painted with dark and bright colors seem to be closer. If you paint the walls with different colors, you’ll be able to balance the layout of the room. For example: a long and narrow rectangular room can be made seen squarer if the smaller walls are painted with dark or bright colors and the longest ones with white or pale colors.

- If you like bright colors but the room is not very big, a way of giving it a touch of color without making it “heavy” is to paint only one wall with a bright color leaving all others in white or in a pale shade of the same color. For example: bright pink and pale pink.

- When placing a decorative border on the wall, you can keep the room looking spacious by using dark colors below the border (if it’s not placed very high) and pale colors above the border.

- Furniture in white or pale shades, painted in similar colors as the walls (e.g. a set of bookshelves) is less conspicuous, making the room look bigger. On the contrary, furniture in dark or bright and contrasting colors with the walls is more imposing, seem to take more space, and make the room smaller. The ideal for a small room, especially if the walls are colored, would be to have pale and light furniture, being a touch of color given through accessories such as: fabrics, paintings, pillows, etc.

You can lay them down in the drawers or hang them on the closets or in any wall or piece of furniture. With very particular names and personalities, all of them have the same goal: give a fresh lavender scent to clothes and rooms and send far away clothes moths and other insects. We have finished our first kit creations. They are, as expected in this time of the year, 4 Christmas kits that go directly to our shop www.biasorao.com, to start our kits and patterns section. Even they are allusive to the Christmas period, we tried to give them a funny touch that could please children and adults. After all, these are indeed kits for all family. The soap that dreamt being an ice skate (part 2)

I hope you remember where you were left with the story, if not read part 1.

Rita’s mom removed the soap out of the package and put it in the bathroom, inside a soap dish.

The poor soap was very sad. Its dream of being an ice skate was far from becoming reality. The only place on which he was gliding was the hands of those who used it, for washing. “Ah! I would give everything for some brief moments of glory as an ice skate! But after all I’m just a simple and afflicted soap, put inside a bathroom!”

One day, while he was in its usual whining, Rita came to wash her hands. Behind her was Pantufa, a restless and joyful puppy that had been recently offered to her.

Standing itself on its two little back feet, Pantufa was trying to pull Rita’s skirt with is teeth to make her play with him. Rita tried to make him go away, but as she had her hands covered with soap and all slippery, the soap rocketed out from her hands, falling down onto the gleaming white marble bathroom’s floor.

The puppy jumped immediately over the soap, thinking this was some kind of new toy. With the thrust, the wet soap went sliding through the floor, very fast, with a hesitant Pantufa trying to keep his balance on top of it, to not fall down.

All this was pure happiness for our soap. “Hurray! Hurray! I am sliding just like a ice skate! I can do it!” And it was on that moment there that the soap stopped feeling sad for being just soap. Truth be told, he felt even more important than any ice skate. “After all, soaps can also glide from time to time just like ice skates. But ice skates cannot be used for cleaning like soaps do!” – he thought – “And if ice skating is important, cleaning is fundamental!”

Thus, with a new won pride in being a soap he never whished being something else again.

O sabonete que sonhava ser patim (2ª parte)

Espero que ainda se lembrem onde a história ficou, senão releiam a 1ª parte.

A mãe da Rita retirou o sabonete do pacote de papel em que vinha embrulhado e colocou-o na casa de banho, dentro de uma saboneteira.

O pobre sabonete ficou muito triste. O sonho de ser patim, estava longe de se realizar. O único sítio por onde deslizava era pelas mãos daqueles que o usavam, para as lavar. “Ah! Como eu dava tudo por uns breves momentos de glória, como patim! Mas afinal não passo de um simples e desconsolado sabonete, enfiado dentro de uma casa de banho!”

Estava ele um dia, nestas habituais lamentações, quando a Rita veio lavar as mãos. Atrás dela vinha o Pantufa, um cachorrinho irrequieto e brincalhão que lhe tinham oferecido há pouco tempo.

Empinando-se nas duas patinhas traseiras, o Pantufa tentava puxar a saia da Rita, com os dentes, para brincar com ela. A Rita tentou afastar o cachorrinho, mas como tinha as mãos ensaboadas e escorregadias, o sabonete saltou disparado das suas mãos e caiu no brilhante chão de mármore branco da casa de banho.

O cachorrinho atirou-se de imediato sobre o sabonete, pensando tratar-se de um brinquedo novo. Com o impulso, o sabonete que estava molhado, foi deslizando pelo chão muito depressa, com o pobre do Pantufa tentando equilibrar-se em cima dele, para não cair.

Foi a felicidade completa para o nosso sabonete. “Hurra! Hurra! Estou a deslizar como um patim! Também sou capaz!” E naquele momento deixou de se sentir triste por ser um sabonete. Na verdade, até se sentiu mais importante do que qualquer patim. “Afinal os sabonetes também conseguem deslizar de vez em quando como os patins. Enquanto que os patins, não podem ser utilizados na limpeza como os sabonetes!” - pensava ele - “E se a patinagem é importante, a limpeza é fundamental!”

Assim, com um novo orgulho em ser sabonete nunca mais desejou ser outra coisa.
